Food & Creativity

Glutton for punishment that I am, I have decided to do NaNoWriMo – National Novel Writing Month. What does that mean? Well, I’m trying to write 50,000 words of a novel in one month — hence no posts here for the last week.

The frustrating thing about writing? For fiction, I like the ritual of cozying up with a glass of wine, maybe some snacks, and hankering down to write. But does writing 50K mean I have to sacrifice my diet?

The obvious answer is no, but it is tempting — to get the creative juices “flowing” with syrah and chocolate. It just seems… right to create a happy space in which to write where there are treats. And since TV isn’t an option (I can watch TV and blog, but I cannot watch and write fiction) and music isn’t nearly as satisfying as a glass of wine, that’s what I did every night last week: a glass of red wine and a writing sprint. Last night I added cardamom ice cream to the mix (AND IT WAS DIVINE, Y’ALL).

A poll for my fellow “dieting” writers out there: do you have food rituals that go with writing? The good, bad & the tasty… I wanna hear them!

I tend to not write and eat cuz I’d be eating ALL DAY!!! I do, however, enjoy a little nibble when working on super boring work like study guides. My favorite is frozen chocolate chips. NOM.
